Bearing witness to the fruit of my obsession, I have taken a stab at listing all of the books I’ve ever read. This is by no means a complete list, but it’s moving in that direction. It makes me feel weird that parts and fragments of all of these books are floating around inside of my brain…
(I’ve only perused the very beginning of your list, which is going to tower so high above my own (non-existent) list that… that… Anyway, I see that there aren’t any of Auster’s novels on there. Is that cuz you missed putting them on there, or because you haven’t read them? If it’s the latter, I highly, highly recommend ’em. Pretty much all of ’em, he’s one of my favorites. I was thinking we’d talked about him somewhere in one of these things before, but I can’t remember specificals.)
i haven’t actually read any of his novels, and i don’t remember you mentioning him before.
i very much enjoyed WHY WRITE?, but i just never got around to reading anything else of Auster’s.
are there any of his novels that you’d recommend particularly?
oh, and by all means, please do recommend any books that aren’t on the list!
oh, and i think at some point i’ll try to put asterisks next to those books which are ultra-double-plus good, to my mind. or maybe those books which were important to me… see, i haven’t decided on that yet.
I was going to ask about the, “which ones are good,” thing. So good, I look forward to asterisks.
Paul Auster: The Music of Chance is a good one. Moon Palace, City of Glass two other good ones. I like them all; though I often have trouble remembering them enough to know why I’d be recommending them (this isn’t unique to his stuff, for me… pretty much I can’t ever remember anything about anything.) If you read any one of those three you’ll have a feel for his style enough to know wether to keep going. If you enjoy one of them chances are you’ll like most of the others.
