  1. Interesting–and yet annoying. First, I don’t think Tolkein really was a romantic. Nor was Henry James a ‘romantic’ in the typical sense–unless the word is defined so broadly it covers almost everything. But I’ve decided not to blather about L of T R or any of the movies as I adore them and hate to overanalyze that which I adore (precisely the thing he is so worried about)…His is such a dull, dull way of reading literature…At the same time I enjoyed the hyperbolic connection between all these elements…as deeply wrong as it was in almost all its details.

  2. I have a weakness for grandiose literary criticism, which, whatever its weakness, Brin’s article seems to have in abundance. (Plus I like his science fiction.)

  3. Wow. I’m looking for alternative careers. I can expound on virtually any subject. And apparently so can he. This Brian guy has got it made. OK, all I need is (1) Some science fiction books (2) Some kind of speaking credibility. I have a Ph.D. already.

I wanted to hate him but I guess since he has a Ph.D. in physics I have to agree that he is smart?

Do my books have to be science fiction books? I think so because they are the only group of readers that hold conventions where they will pay me lots of money.

Shucks…There’s so much darn competition and I’m not sure I can read science fiction anymore let alone write it.

Oh, well…back to the drawing board.

Now I know what I want to do with my life!

  4. A PhD? What fun! I only have a couple of bachelor’s degrees. yo ho!

I don’t think writers in general really make much money at all. Especially not the science fiction writers.

I mean, David Brin’s as successful as they come, but I don’t think that have conventions for him when he comes to town. (Whatever town that might happen to be.)
